Early this year, AllianceBlock introduced the launch of the AllianceBlock DAO to empower our No Mercy Community to take deeper and more meaningful participation in our journey. Today, AllianceBlock is proud to announce that we are taking the next step towards community governance, with Data Tunnel as the first solution to be governed by the DAO.

AllianceBlock has always been a community-driven innovator, and we firmly believe that community governance is the most important step toward a sustainable future. Since 2018 the NoMercy community has grown into a large, engaged, professional, and mature community with a diverse skill set and cultural background.

Our infrastructure is now at a stage of maturity where we can confidently hand over the decision-making process to our community to govern. This is a crucial step in further evolving our community and shaping the future of AllianceBlock and its solutions.

We have examined other DAOs, learned from their experiences and decided that a staged approach to fully realizing this transition is the best way forward. This will give our NoMercy community plenty of time to prepare for the governance process. As a result, we will also be able to learn and use input and guidance from the DAO to improve the process in the following steps and to expand our governance further.

The first stage of DAO governance will be to delegate the decision-making of the Data Tunnel development priorities to the community. The AllianceBlock Data Tunnel is a decentralized data marketplace that unlocks the value of data by making it easy for anyone to publish, contribute, or consume reliable and standardized data. You can find more on how this powers a new data economy here.

The community will work with AllianceBlock to define and influence the strategic direction of Data Tunnel. This will make AllianceBlock more decentralized while fostering innovation driven by our community.

Data Tunnel, a Perfect First Solution To Be Community-Governed

The Data Tunnel is an important entry point for any business or person who wants to enter the #DataConomy, especially in Web3. This next-generation data economy differs from the current data systems in two distinct ways:

  • It allows data contributors to control, monetize and benefit from their published data; and
  • It gives data contributors the right to influence what happens with their data.

This distributed ownership and control are a genuinely disruptive advantage for the users of Data Tunnel. This is impossible for existing data management systems as data is controlled by a centralized entity and are only made available to those who pay for it — limiting the control over and benefits of our digital interactions.

These features align the Data Tunnel and its decision-making process with a DAO governance model. In the future, Web3 community datasets may become community- or user-governed. It is imperative to include the community early in the development process to determine the development priorities for the Data Tunnel and identify what resources we should dedicate to those areas.

Development Priorities

We recently updated the landing page for Data Tunnel. Companies and communities that work with data can now request access to the private beta of Data Tunnel to their benefit as we work together to refine features and functionality further.

As we head towards the Data Tunnel’s public launch, several areas still need to be worked on. As part of the first stage of integrating DAO governance into our process, we would like to invite the No Mercy community to decide the order of our development priorities via a community vote.

The following section offers a high-level overview of our identified development priorities alongside a score of development difficulty and impact. The difficulty level and the impact score for each proposal determine the number of resources and time required to enact the change.

Each development priority will be fully discussed in the Data Tunnel channel on our Discord.

ABQL Redesign to a Visual Workflow Builder

Difficulty: High · Impact: High

With Data Tunnel, our mission is to make data accessible for anyone interested, regardless of whether they have a strong data background or are just casual users who want to make the most out of data. Data can be a complex topic, so we have developed the AllianceBlock Query Language (ABQL). This simpler-to-use query language allows users to access and manipulate data quicker and easier than existing query languages.

We employed extensive conversations and user-feedback rounds with the Data Enthusiast group we set up last year. We learned that the current ABQL still needs to be simplified as it requires a relatively intermediate or advanced technical background. This is a challenge to those that are non-technical users.

This is a representative graphic for the proposed visual workflow builder. Users will be able to add blocks, specify parameters and settings for each, perform actions, etc., to refine results.

Therefore, we propose redesigning ABQL into a visual workflow builder that allows users to query data by simply dragging and dropping different information blocks. This visual query builder will allow users to query data intuitively via the workflow builder, making it easier for non-technical users to access and manipulate data.

Kleros Integration

Difficulty: Very High · Impact: High

As recently brought up in one of the discussions on the AllianceBlock DAO Discord, an important aspect to consider is how to resolve disputes and moderation on several matters, including datasets uploaded to the Data Tunnel. We considered several options, and we now propose integrating the Kleros Protocol, a decentralized arbitration system that uses crowdsourcing to resolve disputes fairly and transparently.

Decentralization has the potential to revolutionize various industries and bring new opportunities for individuals. However, it also presents unique challenges, particularly in conflict resolution. With pseudonymization, bad actors can remain anonymous and evade accountability for their actions, leading to increased risk and potential harm.

Data Tunnel lets users connect only with their wallets and remain pseudonymous to publish, contribute, or subscribe to datasets. As such, there is a potential for malicious actors to upload datasets that may contain personally identifying, harmful or non-compliant information. In these cases, decentralization means distributing the responsibility of arbitrating these cases with the AllianceBlock DAO to decide which data types should or should not be allowed on the platform.

Kleros is a decentralized arbitration system that uses crowdsourcing to resolve disputes fairly and transparently. By relying on a network of independent jurors who review the evidence and vote on decisions, Kleros provides a fast and affordable alternative to traditional legal proceedings.

What’s unique about Kleros is that it has been built to provide a secure and transparent way to provide decentralized justice. By enforcing its decisions through smart contracts on the blockchain, Kleros ensures that decisions are final and cannot be manipulated or overturned.

With Kleros and other decentralized justice systems, individuals and businesses can have greater confidence in the fairness and efficiency of conflict resolution. As decentralization continues to reshape our world, decentralized justice will play a critical role in ensuring equality and accountability for all.

Community Form Builder in Data Tunnel

Difficulty: Medium · Impact: High

The Community Form Builder will let users create forms and share them as surveys to collect responses and additional data points for existing datasets. This is a valuable and impactful method that makes it easier to build and enrich datasets without having to deal with complex tables and data types.

In addition, users can also use these forms to collect data for suggestions and feedback. For example, in the future, we will ask the community to share their ideas for what the new ABQL / Visual Workflow Builder feature should be called, or for a friendlier and more memorable name for “Data Tunnel.” This is a great way to engage our No Mercy Community and have their voice represented in datasets published on the platform itself.

This is a representative graphic for the proposed form builder. Users will be able to add different types of sections to the form and specify the required data types.

With the development of the Form Builder feature, we can gather an array of data from the community. We will directly apply this tool to collect new names for ABQL and Data Tunnel and then rank them so the community can vote on their preferred names.

Next Steps

These are just the first three development priority items that we will propose. More will be published and discussed in the Discord community. Please go through the proposals and study each one carefully. Your input in this governance process is a critical first stage in developing the development priorities for Data Tunnel and defining and improving our early-stage processes for our DAO governance decision-making process.

As we progress towards the discussion phases for these proposals, AllianceBlock will publish more information on the governance process, such as when these proposals will be formalized on Commonwealth and the voting mechanism and process on Snapshot.

If you haven’t already, join our Discord Community to participate in DAO-related discussions. There is a brand new #data-tunnel channel where these proposals can be discussed. Your voice and participation are vital as we transition to a community-governed DAO.
